Kit grabbed a five dollar note and headed for the change machine near the door. As she waited for her money to be converted to coins she casually glanced outside, spotting the ute half a block down. He wouldn’t be able to see much from where he was, but was probably set to follow Rachel when she left. Kit returned to where Rachel was shoving clothes into a machine with more force than necessary.

“Sorry, Rach. I didn’t mean to jump you as you came in. You’re a little later than normal and I was getting concerned, then I saw your bruised throat. You’re my friend and I’m worried about you.”

Rachel stopped what she was doing and turned to face Kit with a shocked expression.

“You consider me a friend? All we ever do is wash our clothes together once a week.”

Kit held her gaze. “And we chat. For a couple hours once a week we talk. That’s more time than most friends spend together each week. Was it Rocco that left the bruises? What the hell did he do to you?”

With a shake of her head, Rachel rolled her lips in as her eyes moistened. She twisted to return to what she’d been doing when Kit couldn’t hold herself back. Kit reached out and gently gripped her shoulder.

“I can help you, Rachel. If you want to get away from him.”

Rachel’s shoulders rose and fell before she faced Kit again, completely stone-faced.

“It’s nothing, Kit. I bruise easily, but thankfully they never last long. This will be completely gone by nightfall. Don’t worry yourself over it, okay?”

Realizing she wasn’t going to get Rachel to admit to anything, Kit let her hand fall away from her shoulder.

“Okay, I’ll leave you alone for now. But promise me that if you ever do need help, you’ll ring me. You can trust me, Rachel.”

“Sure, Kit. I’ll call you… if you give me your number.”

Kit chuckled as she took Rachel’s phone from her. “Well, yeah. A phone number would certainly help things along wouldn’t it?”

She tapped her details in and saved it to her phone book, then sent herself a message so she had Rachel’s.

“Right, and I have yours. Now we can ring during the week and chat whenever the mood strikes us. Maybe even go out for a coffee or something. Jessie calls us the laundry ladies. He thinks I don’t know, but I heard him talking to the others.”
